The Volvo XC40 is a front- or four-wheel-drive premium SUV of a compact class, which became the first car of a "similar format" in the history of the Swedish automaker ... Its main target audience is the inhabitants of large cities (regardless of gender and age) who want an expressive, roomy and technological crossover for everyday use ...

The five-door, designed to compete with models such as the BMW X1, Mercedes-GLA and Audi Q3, was first shown in front of the general public on September 21, 2017 - at a specially organized event at the Volvo studio based in Milan.

The car, the first to "try on" the modular platform CMA (Compact Modular Architecture), received a spectacular appearance, "adult" interior and exclusively turbocharged power plants.

From the outside, the Volvo XC40 immediately catches the eye with its tall, off-road proportioned body that flaunts a host of memorable design cues.

The front of the crossover is designed in the same way as the "older" models: spectacular headlights with LEDs in the form of "Thor's hammer", an impressive "shield" of the radiator grille and a powerful bumper with angular air intakes.

From other angles, this car looks in many ways original, not at all resembling a "large-scale copy" of the XC60 or XC90: an energetic silhouette with embossed sides, a dashing window sill line, "pumped up" hind "thighs" and large strokes of wheel arches and lean stern with spectacular lights and a neat bumper.

"Ik-si-forty" is in the class of compact SUVs: it is 4425 mm long, 1863 mm wide, and 1652 mm high. The gap between the pairs of wheels extends at the five-door by 2702 mm, and its ground clearance does not exceed 211 mm.

The interior of the Volvo XC40 is "painted" in the image and likeness of its "older brothers" - the main focus inside the crossover is placed on a 9-inch vertically oriented screen of the infotainment complex, "surrounded" by stylish ventilation deflectors, which is responsible for controlling most of the functions.

The "plump" multi-steering wheel with a three-spoke rim and a virtual instrument cluster based on a large-format display do not stand out from the general picture (although in the basic version the "instrumentation" is simpler).

In addition to the striking design, the interior of the crossover boasts premium materials and high quality workmanship.

Salon "Swede" has a five-seater layout, and a sufficient supply of free space is promised here to all riders without exception.

The front seats of the off-road vehicle are distinguished by an ergonomic profile with well-developed sidewalls, an optimal cushion length and decent adjustment ranges.

Formally, the rear sofa is a three-seater, but in reality it will be convenient only for two passengers (both its shape and the high floor tunnel in the center hint at this).

The trunk of the Volvo XC40 is quite standard for the class of compact SUVs - 460 liters in the "stowed" position. "Gallery" folds in three sections into a flat area, increasing the cargo capacity of the crossover to 1336 liters.

In the Russian market, the crossover is offered in four versions, equipped with four-cylinder units of the Drive-E family, which perform their duties exclusively jointly with an 8-band "automatic":

  • Petrol versions hide under their hood a 2.0-liter engine with a turbocharger, 16-valve timing, direct injection technology and variable valve timing, which is available in two "pumping" options:
    • on the "younger" version T4 it generates 190 horsepower at 4700 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 1300-4000 rpm;
    • on the "senior" T5 - 249 hp at 5500 rpm and 350 Nm peak potential at 1800-4800 rpm.

    From a standstill to 100 km / h, a car with such a “heart” accelerates after 6.5-8.4 seconds, gains a maximum of 210-230 km / h, and in mixed conditions “drinks” from 6.9 to 7.2 liters of fuel for every “hundred” of run.

  • Diesel cars are driven by a 2.0-liter unit with a turbocharger, direct "power" and a 16-valve timing, declared in two boost levels:
    • on the basic version D3 its potential is 150 horsepower at 3750 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at 1800-4800 rpm;
    • but on the "top" D4 - 190 h.p. at 4000 rpm and 400 Nm available recoil at 1750-2500 rpm.

    To conquer the second "hundred" SUV on diesel fuel rushes in 7.9-10.4 seconds, the peak reaches 200-210 km / h, and in the combined mode consumes 5-5.4 liters of flammable liquid.

The diesel version of the D3 is equipped with front-wheel drive by default, and as an option - an all-wheel drive transmission with a Haldex multi-plate clutch, transferring up to 50% of the power to the rear axle. The rest of the modifications are all-wheel drive by default.

The Volvo XC40 is based on the CMA modular "bogie" with a transverse engine and body, in the design of which there is an abundant proportion of high-strength grades of steel.

At the front, the car is equipped with an independent MacPherson-type suspension, and at the rear, a multi-link control blade system (in both cases, with passive shock absorbers and transverse stabilizers). As an option, a sports or adaptive (with electronically controlled shock absorbers) "walk" is offered for the five-door.

The crossover "flaunts" a rack and pinion steering mechanism with an electric power steering and variable parameters. All wheels of the "Swede" are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, working in conjunction with modern electronic "gadgets".

The main innovation of the all-terrain vehicle is the availability of the “Care by Volvo” subscription service, which offers a “simplified car ownership scheme”, which excludes the traditional purchase from a dealer, bargaining with a manager and obtaining insurance or a loan. This car (in the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Norway and Poland) can be bought online and then paid a monthly flat subscription fee, which, among other things, includes all services for using the car.

On the Russian market, the Volvo XC40 is sold "according to the classic scheme" in four configuration options - "Basic", "Momentum", "Inscription" and "R-Design".

The simplest car with a 150-horsepower diesel engine and front-wheel drive will cost from 2,160,000 rubles, and with an all-wheel drive transmission - from 2,285,000 rubles. It is completed with: seven airbags, air conditioning, a virtual instrument cluster, 17-inch alloy wheels, a multimedia complex, ABS, ESP, power windows for all doors, an audio system, heated front seats, ERA-GLONASS technology, LED headlights, light and rain sensors, and also other modern equipment.

A five-door with an initial gasoline engine costs from 2,325,000 rubles, and the "top-end" version cannot be bought for less than 2,685,000 rubles. The latter boasts: leather interior trim, 19-inch "rollers", dual-zone "climate", front and rear parking sensors, electric driver's seat, premium "music" Sensus and "darkness" of other "bells and whistles".
