The history of the Lada Tarzan model (or in another way - VAZ-210834 / VAZ-210934) began in 1997 - it was then that the AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center, inspired by the Volkswagen Golf Country off-road vehicle, together with the Lada-Consul company and a design studio Decon decided to create a new four-wheel drive vehicle.

They took and "pulled" the body from "Samara" onto a specially created frame with units and assemblies of a standard "Niva", thereby obtaining a comfortable SUV for outdoor enthusiasts. The production of the car continued until 2003, and during this period it sold just over 2.5 thousand copies.

Lada Tarzan is a compact all-terrain vehicle available in two body modifications: a three- or five-door hatchback.

In length, height and width, the car is 4174 mm, 1580 mm and 1690 mm, respectively, and the distance between the wheelsets extends to 2585 mm. The ground clearance of the "all-wheel drive" is a solid 220 mm, and its "combat" weight varies from 1120 to 1240 kg, depending on the modification.

Specifications. For "Tarzan" there are two gasoline power units:

  • The first option is a 1.8-liter (1774 cubic centimeters) carburetor engine with four "pots" and an 8-valve configuration, producing 82 "horses" at 5400 rpm and 134 Nm of peak torque at 3000 rpm.
  • The second is a 1.7-liter (1690 cubic centimeters) "four" with 8 valves and central fuel injection, generating 83 "stallions" at 5200 rpm and 133 Nm of torque at 3200 rpm.

Regardless of the modification, the car is equipped with a 5-speed "mechanics" and an all-wheel drive transmission with a center differential lock and a "transfer case". To the first "hundred" such an off-road vehicle accelerates after 16-17 seconds, gaining a maximum of 140-150 km / h, and "destroys" at the same time from 9.3 to 10.6 liters of gasoline in mixed mode.

At the heart of the Lada Tarzan is a frame welded from steel profiles, bearing the "Nivov" units and assemblies and the Samara body attached by means of eight rubber cushions.

"In a circle" the car has independent suspensions with MacPherson struts, transverse stabilizers, coil springs and hydraulic springs (both axles are front: the second, which is the will of fate to be rear, is installed "back to front").

All wheels of the off-road vehicle are equipped with disc brakes, and its steering system is represented by a rack and pinion mechanism (naturally, without an amplifier).

"Tarzan" of the original embodiment "flaunts": excellent cross-country ability, reliable design, comfortable suspension, high maintainability, affordable content, original appearance and low prevalence on Russian roads (which makes it a real exclusive).
As for the shortcomings of the car, they include: poor build quality, poor sound insulation, low-performing engines, high fuel consumption and solid roll when cornering.
